Ant Keeping

Why did I start keeping ants? I bumped into some random videos on YouTube and it looked like an interesting challenge, I thought nothing more of it until a holiday plan was abandoned due to a train strike, I managed to get a full refund and decided to spend this on something which would last a long time rather than just booking another short break.

How much am I willing to spend on this? Most hobbies have an initial start-up cost but, measured over a longer time, I really don't want to be spending more than the cost of a pint each day.

I am viewing this as a hobby and learning exercise, not all 'experiments' will be a success and ants will die. Whilst I will look after the ants to the best of my ability, I do not see them as pets like a cat or a dog.

 

How long will it last? I don't know but I've got a few things which I want to try and will document them until I lose interest. This is a 'hobby' which requires regular input but not necessarily a huge amount of time. I'm looking to learn rather than keep particularly exotic species.

Since it is intended to be a learning exercise, I intend to document what I learn for my own reference but in case it is useful to anyone, the documentation will eventually be structured like this.
