Steaming Vegetables


Many fresh vegetables are suitable for steaming and it is an easy way to cook them. There are also some added benefits with vitamins being retained and delicate vegetables such as broccoli keeping its appearance rather than being battered about in a boiling pan of water.

The following times are those I use with my electric steamer but are equally applicable to a hob-based steamer, you may need to adjust times to suit the size of the pieces being steamed.

  • Broccoli - 5 minutes

  • Carrots - 15 to 20 minutes

  • Potatoes - 20 to 25 minutes
